10 Wilmington-area adventures worth a day trip from camp
From Wrightsville Beach at sunrise to the Battleship at golden hour — ten trips inside a half tank of gas.
Wilmington welcomed nearly 5 million visitors in 2024 — and not because the city has one big attraction. It's because every direction from downtown takes you somewhere worth a trip. Here are ten day trips you can plan straight from Island Creek, with honest drive times and what to know before you go.
1. Wrightsville Beach
~25 min · 14 mi south. The headline beach. Hard-packed sand for biking, world-class surf at the south end, paddleboard rentals, and a casual restaurant scene. Parking warning: free spots fill up by 10am on summer weekends. Plan to be there early or after 4pm.
2. Carolina Beach Boardwalk
~30 min · 22 mi south. The classic NC beach-town day. Boardwalk rides, donuts at Britt's (skip the line, get a dozen), and a laid-back vibe. Plus Carolina Beach State Park next door if you want a hike-then-beach combo.
3. Battleship North Carolina
~22 min · 12 mi. Nine decks of WWII battleship across the river from downtown. Self-guided tour, gun turrets, crew quarters, mess decks. Plan two hours minimum, longer with kids who like to climb everything. The best photo of the ship is from the Riverwalk side, not the Battleship side.
4. Wilmington Riverwalk + Downtown
~20 min · 11 mi. Cobblestone streets, locally-owned shops, restaurants, and a riverwalk USA Today named one of America's best in 2026. Take a Cape Fear Riverboat sunset cruise if the timing works. Film tourism note: most of One Tree Hill, Dawson's Creek, and parts of Iron Man 3 were filmed here.
5. NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher
~40 min · 28 mi south. Touch tanks, sharks, sea turtles. Combine with Fort Fisher State Recreation Area for a free public beach + Civil War history afternoon. A full-day combo.
6. Airlie Gardens
~18 min · 10 mi. 67 acres of Gilded Age gardens — the 467-year-old Airlie Oak, the butterfly house, azaleas in season (peak: late March through April), and seasonal events year-round. Walkable in about 2 hours with kids.
7. Children's Museum of Wilmington
~22 min · 12 mi. Hands-on exhibits, interactive play for kids up to 10. The rainy-day rescue, and a worthwhile stop even without rain. Plan 2–3 hours.
8. Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park
~20 min · 11 mi. Water slides, mini golf, laser tag, arcade, go-karts. A full afternoon if you let it be. Best for the 6–14 age band.
9. Topsail Beach + Sea Turtle Hospital
~30 min · 17 mi north. The locals' beach. Less crowded than Wrightsville, sand dollars at low tide, and the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is a great kid-friendly stop. Slower pace, smaller crowds.
10. Greenfield Lake + Kayak Rentals
~25 min · 14 mi. Free walking and biking trails, kayak rentals, gardens. Cypress trees and turtles. A gentle morning trip for families with younger kids.
The trick to Wilmington is mixing the headline beach days with a quieter morning. A 5-day trip ideally has three beach days, one downtown / Battleship day, and one aquarium / Fort Fisher combo.
